Digital Screencast: Corel Painter Movie of van Gogh Caricature

Angie

Written by Angie

As many of you know, the Official Painter Magazine featured my art study tutorials in this issue (32). I documented the creation of each caricature by recording the entire process.

Drawing with my Cintiq 21UX digital drawing tablet, I created a caricature of Vincent van Gogh in his style, but with a new twist.

I also recommend you pick up a copy of Issue 32 of the Official Corel Painter Magazine to see all the great artwork from many other artists from around the world, as well as read my own art study.

When I was drawing this design, I was going pretty far outside my ‘comfort zone’ and was playing around with different pastel brushes in Painter since I was going for a specific style. As a result, you can actually see my thought process through the entire video where I will begin a background concept, only to go over it again with another idea.

In hindsight, I actually like watching this process, as it illustrates what many artists discover; that art is an organic process. You’ll also notice I flip the face at one or two points to check the balance. This is a common technique for artists to see the balance of an image. A correctly balanced image should like “correct” flipped either way horizontally.

Angie is an author and professional digital artist, living in the beautiful foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, just outside of Philadelphia, PA. She entertains at trade shows and corporate events with her Live Digital Caricatures and is an international award winning artist. Angie's book, Byting into Live Digital Caricatures, is being sold around the world to digital artists and has been called "the definitive guide" to live digital caricatures. It is available exclusively through Digital Blacksmiths.

Hey Angie! top job!
I really like the way you succeeded to work in van Gogh’s own unique style. The likeness is dead on!

I like your work but no way can I keep up or learn how to do a similar caricature watching these tutorials. I have painter11 and a wacom tablet but i have been able learned how to use it yet :( my question is would your book get me started in learning how to create one of your caricature tutorials? BTW I’m a member of ISCA that’s where I saw your link.

Hey, Eddie! Thanks for the comments on Angie’s work. I’ll have her email you. The screencasts are not meant to be like a step by step tutorial. They are more like a view into the creative process of how she sees the caricature take form.
The book is heavily geared towards the technical side of what is needed for doing live digital caricatures. There is a CD-ROM that comes with it that has a few movies on it of her talking about what she is doing. These videos are not sped up like the ones on this site, and the CD-ROM also has her talking over the video explaining. But it’s not a character design video, meaning, she doesn’t go into how she draws the style, just the technique to draw in Painter. Sorry for the long answer and I hope I sort of hit the question you had. Please let me know if this was the info you were looking for!!! Scott
