I only use Painter and Photoshop for drawing and it only works with Photoshop, I believe. To rotate the canvas in Painter, you hold down the E key to turn the curser to the "hand" tool. I actually like this way better because of the higher precision in the canvas rotation.

I have my touch wheel set to enlarge/shrink the brush (dot at position 1 and 3) and scrub through the history (dot on position 2 and 4). I like only using the touch wheel for those two because then I just have to toggle the touch wheel center button once to go back and forth between the two.

Hope that helps! Thanks for stopping by and I too love the tablet!

We just purchased the Intuos4 and stumbled across this review. We love the tablet, but I have one question I hope you can help with. Is there any way to use the touch ring for rotating the canvas outside of using Photoshop CS4? Can it be done with any other application or version of Photoshop?

Hi Scott,
Thanks for responding. So, I am guessing, the Touch Ring on the Intuos 4 cannot be set to rotate the canvas in an orthogonal viewport in modo. Thanks,

I get what you mean perfectly now, and that makes perfect sense. I'm not sure the answer to this. I know if you go to perspective from Front view, the background image will come along and float, but you seem to already have done that. Maybe if you tried changing the transparency of the geometry. Not an elegant solution, but maybe it could work.

Hi Scott,
I'm following a modo tutorial-the honeybee from Luxology. I'm sculpting (carving) from a front view with an image as my template. If I go into perspective view I can't see the template through the area I am carving. If I could rotate the canvas while in front view I could make better strokes. When I have to draw almost straight down, my hand is not steady, and it's hard to correct the lumpy carved lines later. Trying to rotate the tablet itself so my hand is moving in a more controllable direction is frustrating because I am not following what I see. Does this make sense? Thanks, Betsy

I'm unsure if I understand you correctly so please forgive me if my answer is answering the wrong idea. In modo, you can rotate the view to any direction using the Option key (Alt on a PC). Similarly, you can move the view using the Option-Shift combination, and zoom using the Option-Control combination.

Are you thinking of Painter or Photoshop? Because you CAN rotate the canvas using the scroll wheel quite easily in both of these programs. But the way modo works, the 'canvas' is really in 3D space and if you want to rotate, you just swing around to look at it from the other angle.

Hi Scott,
Thank you for your review. I found it because I was searching to see whether it is possible to rotate the canvas in modo. I am having a great deal of trouble with brush strokes of certain angles. Can you rotate the canvas in modo without having the new Intuos 4? I have the previous version. Thanks for your help!

Thanks! I just was asked about the LED text that is displayed and how it works when flipping the orientation of the tablet. The text flips 180 degrees depending if the buttons are on the left or right. However, they do NOT flip 90 degrees if the button orientation is set to top or bottom.
